Golden Twilight

Oil on canvas - 122x61cm (48x24in) - 2013

Horacio Cardozo just seems to have this uncanny ability to capture moments that only exist between times and between what is and what isn’t. The details of his oil portrait are lush and decadent without being overbearing or too complex.
This boat painting takes me to a place where I simply am. I don’t know where I am or where I’m going. The only thing I know is that I am tiny amongst an endless aqueous giant and I’m perfectly okay with that. This painting reminds me of absolute serenity, peace- the ultimate calm. The beautiful gradient on the majestic waters is just as breathtaking as the skies beyond it.

Oranges & Pomegranates

Oil on canvas - 122x83cm (48x33in) - 2012
© Horacio Cardozo
Every aspect of Oranges and Pomegranates is illustrated with patient attention to detail. The reflections of orange slices on the knife blade, the bright golden contours of pulp, the red glow of each delicate pomegranate seed and their shadows strewn across the wooden table – all rendered with particular care. This delicious ensemble is supported by a cast of finely composed porcelain that leaves the viewer with an impression of spatial depth and weight. Treated to a metaphor for both the bitter and sweet parts of life, the viewer’s mouth waters at the stark depictions of these traditional and exotic fruits.

Standing Nymph

Oil on canvas - 153x101cm (60x40in) - 2011

Image of model by Andy Kabanoff
In Standing Nymph, abstract and classical figurative elements are combined in a most contemplative work. The background treatment evokes Rothko’s multiforms. The gold and umber tones provoke thoughts of nature: autumn leaves and tree bark. The girl stands in a pensive, almost ambiguous pose; half of her existing in our world, the other half part of another. Her gaze is distant. Her eyes long for moments filled with song and dance.  She is conflicted and clutches herself, in search of a kind of safety, as her purity (symbolized by the white drapery) slips away from her bare skin.

Two Boats on the Beach

Oil on canvas - 101x101cm (40x40in) - 2011
© Horacio Cardozo

Two Boats on the Beach tells a story of recent arrivals, possibly even intimate friends who have chosen to escape from chaotic lives to find relaxation and exploration on a sandy shore. The proximity of the boats with their shadows touching, denote a close relationship between the travelers. The wooden trim of the exteriors are similar in model and size and composed with equal diligence. But it is in the crafts’ differences that the painter expresses the characters of both the vessels and travelers. One is bare, simple and proper condition. The other is complex, worn, more experienced.
