Quinces

The blend of colors on the quinces, and the rest of the drawing for that matter, make the mouth water. The juicy quinces are a playful blend of greens like citron, French lime and yellows- the bird on the porcelain vase looks as though he is swooping in to devour the sliced half of quince. We instantly thought about the shape of a woman’s hips the moment I looked at the fruit.  The maternal quality of women and the strong soft shapes of their bodies. The detailing is impeccable and the shadows add depth to the painting in more ways than one. We can feel a deep and profound correlation between two things, e.g., the sweet quince fruit and its poisonous seeds. Amazingly, the juicy yellows, greens and blues mingle perfectly with the satiny red Chinese painting. There is a reassuring divinity in the backdrop that promises to fill us with the seeds accomplishment. My mind races when I visually consume this work. This oil painting has a very perplexing quality about it.

One Way

This remarkable painting is a deviation from the more traditional paintings Horacio Cardozo offers. This one is interesting in the sense that it seems to depict probability. We each start off on the path of life with only a burning desire to find the place that we belong, the people we will love and self-fulfillment. The bike, powered by our willingness to endure, hurls us down a road we all must take. Whether we deviate from that path is a matter of where the heart is not where the mind is fixated. The bike is the perfect symbol for the flawless transitions we make on our journey back home.

Sitting Nude

At first glance, we immediately feel like this composition is a representation of womanhood. There is something very warm and sirenic about this piece. The milky sheets that are cascading around her lower body remind us of a blossoming flower.  I love how the sunlight is gaily echoing her creamy peachy skin tone. The golden strands of her hair are both romantic and inviting. She is exuding an uncanny Amazonian confidence. Her strong stance is brilliant and the femininity of the dimples in her lower back trace all the way up to this woman peering into the sun. This mysterious woman is proud, alluring and refreshingly free.

Red Boat

Where were they going and did they ever actually arrive? This painting is a reminder of the fact that our lives are but a journey. Perhaps this red boat serves as a symbol of man’s everlasting and undying pursuit of happiness. Although transparent, life remains in the boat. Through the mind’s eye, it’s almost as if you can see someone there— the anchor acts as a safety net and the ores are not in use. I love that there seems to be a strong element of the in-between in this work. The boat is physically here and yet at the same time appears to be no where. No where with a visible horizon, sun or stars— possibly even trapped between time and space? Perhaps even existing solely in the mind or in our ever-changing emotions. I can smell the spice and almost taste it on my breath— ironically enough, this piece reminds one of Aristotle’s Golden Mean.

Golden Twilight

Horacio Cardozo just seems to have this uncanny ability to capture moments that only exist between times and between what is and what isn’t. The details of his oil portrait are lush and decadent without being overbearing or too complex.
This boat painting takes me to a place where I simply am. I don’t know where I am or where I’m going. The only thing I know is that I am tiny amongst an endless aqueous giant and I’m perfectly okay with that. This painting reminds me of absolute serenity, peace- the ultimate calm. The beautiful gradient on the majestic waters is just as breathtaking as the skies beyond it.
